De oorsprong van The Trammps ligt in de zestiger jaren. Begonnen als een soulgroep onder de namen the Volcano's en the Moods bereikten ze enige bekendheid in de stad van herkomst Philadelphia. Midden jaren zeventig werd de band omgevormd tot the Trammps waarmee ze tot 1976 een aantal bescheiden hits scoorden. In Nderland waren ze trouwens wat succesvoller dan in de Verenigde Staten. Echt succes hadden ze in 1977 met de superhit 'Disco Inferno' afkomstig van de soundtrack van de discofilm met John Travolta in de hoofdrol 'Saturday Night Fever'. In 1980 werd de band ontbonden. In later jaren traden The Trammps opnieuw op in verschillende bezettingen waarbij meestal wel een of meerdere van de oorspronkelijke bandleden deel van uitmaakten.
